City walk in Homberg (Efze)

On the move together in the "Homberg City Centre" area

The town of Homberg (Efze) was included in the "Social Cohesion" urban development programme. The area around Freiheit, Ziegenhainer Straße and Untergasse was explored on a walk through the town with local residents.

Two central questions were important at the event:

  • What should change?
  • What ideas are there for improvement?

The event took place on 2 December 2025 from 16:00 - 18:00.

Summary of Key Participation Results

During the city walk, key locations and project ideas within the funding and study area were presented and discussed at eleven stops. The feedback revealed which locations and topics participants consider particularly important for the future development of the city center and where they see an urgent need for action.

The bus station and its surroundings were discussed extensively. Participants identified a lack of digital passenger information, inadequate lighting, insufficient signage, and a lack of weatherproof and lockable bicycle parking. They expressed a desire for increased safety, improved quality of stay, greenery, and clearly defined entrances to the old town. The idea of repurposing the former fire station for various public services, such as a city library and youth centers, was also raised.

Furthermore, recurring themes emerged at several stops: the need for renovations and vacant properties, particularly in Untergasse and Freiheit, the lack of attractive public spaces for gathering and socializing, and accessibility issues. In the area of traffic, excessive speeds were noted, particularly in Untergasse and Ziegenhainer Straße, negatively impacting safety and the quality of life. Traffic calming measures were generally welcomed, but the need for parking spaces close to destinations was also emphasized, especially for senior citizens.

The existing half-timbered buildings in the old town, the strong sense of community in the Freiheit district, and the quiet, low-traffic area around St. Nicholas Square were highlighted as positive aspects.

Overall, the feedback from participants underscores the desire for an integrated approach to the further development of the city center. This approach addresses key shortcomings in public spaces and existing buildings, improves traffic safety and accessibility, and simultaneously preserves and enhances existing qualities and places that contribute to the city's identity.
